The most liberating idea that I came across as filmmaker is the one about camera. Photographer Chase Jarvis said that the best camera is the one you currently have with you. At the time of filming Colva Fishing Boats, I had a Samsung smartphone camera with me, whose lens had developed a slight crack.
The other liberating idea or rather approach for a filmmaker is a style of filming.-the fly on the wall style of filming. This was the best approach for the scenes that were unfolding in front of me. So I found my spot near a coconut tree and let my imperfect camera roll.
On the beach of Colva, South Goa, India, fishermen are preparing their boats to venture out into the sea as the monsoon season comes to an end. It is a fascinating spectacle of teamwork and combined effort to move the boats from their static position. The electric cry of “High Josh, High Josh!” helps keep the energy levels high. Definitely not for the faint-hearted!
Sometimes certain limitations can be advantageous after all. Thanks to my simple phone camera, this video captures the authentic essence of the moment taking place against the backdrop of a beautiful sunset. Enjoy a truly uninterrupted view. Observe every detail of the scene and immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere that characterizes this place. Let the magical medium of cinema transport you to the shores of Goa, where hard work and natural beauty come together in perfect harmony.
