Remember the famous Chainsmokers song, ‘Let me Take a Selfie‘ that came out in 2014? If the girl featured in this video had shot this a decade earlier her efforts might have not gone that unnoticed. She definitely stood a chance at being featured in the band’s famous music video.
Like a true selfie enthusiast, she has gone to great heights to take one decent selfie. Not only has she literally climbed a small hill, but also fought the extremely gusty wind. The winds are so strong that the girl is neither able to hold herself, nor her camera together. So much for a mere selfie! The winds and the rains ensure she doesn’t pose. Yet, wrapped in a cheap blue raincoat the girl refuses to give up, and continues to fight the wind in order to pose for a simple yet picturesque selfie in the backdrop of the famous Vagator beach situated in North Goa, India.
Girl you are brave! Selfie enthusiasts take some inspiration you all. 🏅
But here’s the thing. That Chainsmokers song came out in 2014.✌️ In these current times, in the year 2024, no one gives a damn about a selfie. Selfie is no longer a novelty or a quirk in the photography aesthetic. Smartphone companies have legitimised it through and through by providing dedicated ‘selfie’ cameras. The front camera has been successfully rechristened as a ‘selfie’ camera. Selfies are no longer something that stupid youngsters click to appear dorky or cute. 🧑But oldies have embraced the magic of the front camera too. They regularly click themselves and upload it on their social media statuses, often to the embarrassment of their family.
Moreover, it has become vital that one looks good in selfies. What with phone screens getting bigger and cameras getting better, many of the selfie enthusiasts spend hours getting overtly critical of their looks. I have heard many instances where people ditched their super clear iPhone cameras for more affordable android phones. Reason? The much praised iPhone with its great camera clarity has been blowing up people’s blemishes and imperfections on their faces. Urrgs! Your own face is an unbearable sight. Who can stand that?
These unappealing selfies are discouraging peeps from clicking selfies or using phone cameras altogether. So to combat this smartphone cameras have started doing something with its selfie outputs. Selfie cameras beautify you instantly as soon as they capture you. As a result you find yourself happily looking at yourself all day long. And fall in love. ✨ With yourself. (While you are at it don’t forget to be a good ambassador of self love campaign and share those pics on social media). All this while being under the impression that you are actually look pretty and not as bad as you thought when you clicked selfies from your previous phone camera. Bring on more selfies!
Wait wait. Smartphone makers’ obsession with self love does not end with better selfie cameras. Now we also have AI (Artificial Intelligence)! Its everywhere right? These new age AI enabled cameras promise much much more. Deletion, addition, magical enhancement and what not. Which means now you can imagine your photograph -or selfie- the way you want. Its not just about the blemishes on your skin. Its about the setting too. You don’t need to spend tons of money on beautifying your physical backdrop or hours on photo editing tools. All you have to do is spend money on the latest smartphone.
Photos are no more about documentation of truth or reality, but it can be a figment of your own fantasy or imagination. But weren’t paintings always about that. No? Okay so now that we are talking about photography, AI and paintings. I might as well say it…
AI generated art sucks. 😛
