A strange tour inspired by the colonial era Human Zoos discovered in Kolkata.

Human Zoos of the European colonial era shut down long ago, but shockingly there still exists one in Kolkata, India. Ironically Kolkata was the capital of British East India Company when Britain ruled India. Therefore, Kolkata is dotted with the remnants of colonial era. But this particular remnant came as a shock. Organised by a company called Viator, a subsidiary of Trip Advisor, the company offers guided tour to a Kolkata slum where visitors get to see residents in their ‘natural settings’ quite similar to the exhibits of the 19th and 20th century Human Zoos. This tour appears to be inspired by the colonial era Human Zoos. If the reviews of the tour are to be believed the visitors are charmed by the ‘smiling faces’ and ‘warmth’ of the slum residents.

Awww! So cute. So many awesome memories of India and its ‘simple’ people with the their ‘simple’ lives. When asked if Viator shares the wealth generated by this expensive tour, the reply was confusing and abstract.

This tweet left me confused.
